Caught in the middle of trouble, in a city of trouble, with no backpack and no backup! What will happen to our heroine?!
… Aaaaaaand jump cut to another group.

Ooooo, just how mean can the Tenin soldiers get when they find a helpless Demon in their midst?
To be fair if those guys are goes through the same steps as Cormac they were former patrol members. As working as a patrol the only demons they met probably wanted to rip their guts out, and possible lost a comrade or two during their time. I don’t think they ever have met a friendly demon before or heck even know that not all demons wants to rip then limb from limb.
I find it a bit odd that the armor they were seem to differ from each other. I can understand a reader’s armor may be different from a standard guard so it’s easier to differentiate a reader from a non-reader, but it’s kind of strange that so far they don’t seem to have standard issue equipment like the guards at the front. Which does make me think if they aren’t part of the guard perhaps they are mercenaries as you mention previously.
What is that reader going to do with his dagger? I’m thinking he may have some questions of his own for Ember. As he said he thinks Elane is nuts, and might want some answers for why she has taken interest in Ember. Normally I would assume if there is a demon in their midst they would jump to put it down quickly to prevent any trouble from starting, but this seems to be the exception.
I don’t think I like the way he reaching for the Dagger…
I don’t like the way he is reaching for his belt…
Are we about to see a pussycat? They seemed to be friendly with Ember, might be loitering outside-hours setting up their stall, and seemed savvy enough to deal with thugs when a town-guard is on-hand…
No one does.
It’s a baaad omen.
He just wants to show her the cool new blade he bought to celebrate his promotion.
By placing it against her neck perhaps?
I can only imagine what the voice in Ember is saying. Probably screaming to her that this is proof that she has no place here. That she needs to return to Flint’s side, and finding a “cure” is impossible so she should give up on that as well.
I bet it’ll start screaming some other stuff too, once we find out why the knife is coming out.
O_o my mind immediately goes to an almost-r*** scene in a book i have. this can’t be good…
W0lf did say this story was going to get “darker” as time went on.
