It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Lupa! It’s weird to look back to the last time we saw her, when I didn’t have quite as many tricks up my sleeve.
Makes me think if everyone interpreting The Voice commands differently. Veera, Flint, Lupa: they all have different takes on what is to be a demon.
Or maybe we just seen their actions out of context, and they’re not that different?.. Who knows.
Though there is one question about Learim Sanctuary if it is the town that Ember originated from I have some doubts that it was destroyed by the Tennin. If it was Flint could’ve just told Ember, Cole, and Bernin that so they would build a distrust of the outside world and be more incline in staying with him and diving deeper into demon hood.
It makes me think that there must have been some sort of power struggle instead. As Veera’s bloodline is starting to see Flint’s line as weak it could’ve been different demon bloodlines challenging each other that lead to the destruction of Learim Sanctuary.
Ah so Lupa’s group are Ferals, and Followers of the Voice. Sure they can hide their red eyes, but can they remain undetected by readers? Perhaps there is something special about Lupa’s amulet that hides her presence?
Also what does Lupa mean by “You both frequently go to the border.” Is Lupa taking about Ember and Echo? or Echo and someone else? If it is Ember does that mean Lupa has been somehow keeping tabs on Ember this entire time? Then again if it is Ember she is referring to wouldn’t that be a bit risky for Ember to travel close to the border since Patrols frequent that area and they have readers that can detect her?
Now that I think about it earlier when we first saw Lupa’s group Ember “mistaken” them as Ferals or at least “wild” Ferals does Ember not know that Lupa’s groups are Ferals or have “wild” Ferals caused problems to Ember’s family before?
Of course where does all those demon ferals come from? If those Ferals Cormac’s group fight are whats keeping the Tennin away those Ferals seems to die by the dozen and Veera did say those Cormac’s group and assuming all other patrols fight are mislead ferals. I personally want to see more about ferals and their way of life like we have seen some of the Tennin. At least the Ferals that aren’t demon touched, and perhaps how are the mislead into being the buffer between Tennin and followers of The Voice.
Also Learim Santuary? Is that the name of the town that was destroyed where Ember, and the others originally lived in? That would make some sense as it would’ve been a place for demons to live in and may have been destroyed during the great war.
1. Not sure if they can even hear the Voice. Most likely Lupa acts as the voice of The Voice.
2. Readers can detect only demon’s blood, not Voice-hearers. See page 134.
I must have missed that bit back there about The Voice followers without demon blood. I am thinking those that don’t have demon blood may seem to act more as informants/scouts seeing that power itself seems to be more tied to certain demon bloodlines.
I was thinking on the lines like Ember where if she keeps her emotions in check she can hide the fact she has red eyes, but readers can still detect her demon blood. In fact readers seem to be able to gauge how strong of a spellcaster others can be; not just whether they are a demon or not.
This now brings the question can there be a follower of The Voice that is a very strong spellcaster like Veera/Flint, but without any demon blood flowing through them? If there is where do they fit in if they do not have any demon bloodlines.
I have a feeling that there is going to be a flashback in the next page explaining what Lupa has said.

So the Learim Sanctuary is gone, thought so. I think that the old burnt down town the Memeelis family lives in was once the Sanctuary.
Ack you just beat me to this thought.

I may be wrong about this but I think the Learim Sanctuary was the place Death destroyed to prevent the others from learning her secrets.
lupa’s marks seem a lot more ethereal now than they did before good job.
